Cleaning, maintenance and repair of your wood stove

If your wood is not dry enough, the combustion temperature will be too low. The wood will then smolder instead of burn, and this results in soot on the glass. You can clean the glass with ordinary window cleaner or a special glass cleaner, which you can buy from your local HETA dealer.

You can wipe the stove with a damp cloth. Repair any minor damage with a repair varnish spray.

Soapstone is a relatively soft natural product. You can therefore repair small scratches or other damage to the surface with fine sandpaper (grain 120), but be careful.

You can clean dirty surfaces of soot, grease, etc. with water or brown lye soap.

  1. Lather the soap on the surface
  2. Let it work for a few minutes
  3. Wash the surface with warm water
  4. When the surface is dry, it can, if needed, be sanded lightly with fine sandpaper

If a bigger piece has chipped off, you can glue it back on with water glass, which you can buy from your local HETA dealer.

  1. Apply water glass to both surfaces
  2. Keep the piece in place for 24 hours
  3. Sand with sand paper, grain 120

If a piece is missing, or the impact mark is deep, you can repair the damage with a mixture of soapstone powder and water glass, which you can buy from your local dealer.

  1. Mix powder and water glass to a suitable consistency
  2. Remove any dust
  3. Apply the water glass with a brush to ensure good adhesion
  4. Apply ample soapstone mass, since it contracts as it hardens. You can add on as you go, if necessary
  5. After 24 hours, you can sand down the hardened surface. Start with grain 60-80 and finish with grain 120
